“I think ringette is different because it’s faster and requires more teamwork than any other ice sport.”
“I play ringette for the teammate beside me. When I have won a ring battle, out-skated an opposing player, or challenged the goalie in taking a shot, I know I have done it for my team.”
—Calgary AA Ringette athletes, 2017
Calgary AA Ringette has a new look. What went into its logo design?
First, some challenges. The digital universe has changed everything. A logo should be clean and simple for use on Internet, social media, and our smart phones. As a sports association, we don’t have a lion, tiger, or bear in our name—so how do we bring two A’s to life in a world that already contains so many AA companies and brands? On the ice, our logo needs to be recognizable from a distance, and off the ice, reproduce well on clothing or in print, and on different-coloured backgrounds, big or small. Modern logos are versatile in their full form, or can be stripped down to an iconic form for certain uses (as can be seen below).
We are an association, but also a sports team. We are about building an individual athlete’s skills and confidence, but always through teamwork and collaboration. And we are Ringette, the fastest game on ice.
So next hurdle, how to make a logo with two A’s do all of that?
Here it is! The ring represents both Ringette and Calgary AA as an association. Our AA’s represent teammates leaning into forward motion, with cut-lines that represent skates and speed.
The background circle becomes the ice surface, with our AAs’ working together, anticipating a pass up the ice. The A’s are also shaped like triangles—a very important and unique defensive aspect to our sport. The thin blue and white speed lines also represent our fast game. Our logo is strong, proud, competitive and all about teamwork, just like our athletes and ringette program.
We’re very excited about our new logo, and look forward to rolling it out in the new season.
We would especially like to thank Jon Seykora with AdFarm for his inspired efforts and countless hours. As well, thank you to all players, parents and coaches involved in the design process for their valuable feedback and time.
