Canada Winter Games

In February, athletes from across Canada gathered in PEI to take part in the Canada Winter Games.  Several members of our U19AA program, members from other Alberta U19AA programs, and players from Alberta NRL teams came together to form Team Alberta.  Team AB breezed through the round robin going undefeated in pool play.    Team AB took care of business in the quarterfinals against Team BC and then again in the semi-finals against Team Saskatchewan.   On the other side, Team Quebec shook off a rough tournament start to go undefeated through the qualification, quarter and semi-final rounds to earn a spot in the gold medal match against Team AB.  The final was an exciting, edge of your seat, game that saw Team Quebec come from behind to edge out Team Alberta to take the gold.

Provincial Championships

Calgary was proud to host the U14AA and U16AA Provincial Championships this year.   

In the U14AA division U14AA Red, Blue, and White battled it out for provincial bragging rights.  All three teams played strong through the round robin play with each team earning a spot in the semi-finals on Sunday.   White and Blue squared off in a tightly contested match on Sunday morning with Blue edging out White to book a ticket in the finals.   Red battled Zone 2 in the other semi-final game with Red earning the other ticket in the finals.    In the bronze medal game, White took care of business against Zone 2 earning them the Bronze medal.   In the gold medal match, Red jumped out to an early lead and closed out the first period leading by a few.   Blue battle hard in the second period to cut the deficit to one but Red held off the barrage to take home the Gold medal with Blue earning the Silver.   All three teams earned a spot at Westerns in Winnipeg.

U16AA PACE, CURRENT, and CORE travelled to Hussar to battle for Provincial hardware and a spot in the National Championships.  All three teams faced stiff competition in round robin play with only CORE earning a spot in the semi-finals on Sunday.   In the morning game CORE met a determined team from St Albert who battled back from a two goal deficit in the fourth quarter to take the game into overtime.  Overtime was a tight checking affair with chances at both ends of the ice.  In the end, St Albert struck first sending CORE to the bronze medal game against Zone 2.  The bronze medal game was a classic barn burner with Zone 2 jumping out to a two goal lead midway through the third quarter only to have CORE battle back with four unanswered goals, taking a two goal lead late into the fourth quarter.  Zone 2 made it interesting cutting the deficit to one with just over a minute left to play but CORE halted the comeback to take home the Bronze.  CURRENT played to a fifth place position and will join CORE at Nationals in April. 

U19AA RISE and FUSION travelled to Cochrane, Alberta to compete for medals and a spot at Nationals.  Friday and Saturday games saw stiff competition with the top four teams all ending up tied heading into the Sunday morning semi-finals.  In the first semi-final,  RISE won a nail biter in overtime against St Albert to earn a birth in the final.   In the second semi-final, Zone 2 won a tough battle against FUSION setting up a final against RISE.    In the bronze medal game, FUSION and St. Alberta played an exciting back and forth affair with FUSION edging out St Albert to take the Bronze Medal.   In the gold medal final, RISE flexed their scoring muscle, taking an early lead and never looking back, taking the coveted Gold Medal and a chance to represent as Team Alberta at Nationals.

Western Canadian Ringette Championship Results

10 teams and 150+ athletes from across western Canada in the U14AA division travelled to central Canada and came together in Winnipeg, MB to rise to the challenge of the Western Canadian Ringette Championships.  After three days of hard-fought battles, AA Calgary teams skated away with all three medals with U14AA Red claiming the Gold, U14AA White taking the Silver, and U14AA Blue winning the Bronze.   Congratulations to all three teams for your great accomplishments on the ice.

Canadian National Championships

49 teams and over 1000 athletes from U16AA, U19AA, and NRL teams from across the country travelled to Regina, SK to complete in the Canadian National Ringette Championships.   

In the U16AA Division,  CURRENT and CORE battled hard through round robin play earning them both a spot in the Championship round.   CURRENT crushed an unforgettable play-in game vs PEI and left it all on the ice in a quarterfinal game against the eventual gold medalists from New Brunswick.   CURRET arrived at CRCs as AB5 and ended their season as CAN5.  CORE took care of Team BC in their quarterfinal game but came up short in a tough semi-final battle against the eventual silver medalists from Sherwood Park.  CORE left it all on the ice in tight checking Bronze Medal match against St. Albert but had to settle for fourth.  CORE arrived at CRCs as AB3 and ended their season as CAN4. Congratulations to both teams on an outstanding year.

In the U19AA Division, Team Alberta (RISE) and FUSION played strong in round robin pool play earning them both a spot in the Championship round.   Both Team Alberta (RISE) and FUSION cruised to victory in their quarterfinal games but ran into tough opponents in the semi-finals with RISE dropping a close battle to Zone 2 and FUSION falling to eventual gold medalists St Albert.   Both Calgary AA teams faced off in the Bronze Medal match with FUSION earning the victory and capturing the Bronze.
